Samantha L. Hague

BSc(HONS) MCOptom Prof Cert Med Ret

Principal Optometrist & Practice Owner

Samantha Hague studied optometry at Aston University having grown up in the Wightwick area of Tettenhall. Graduating with honours and following her postgraduate training with Dollond & Aitchison in Shrewsbury, Sam registered with the General Optical Council as a qualified Optometrist over 30 years ago, in 1992.

Sam has worked across her profession in both clinical practice-based roles and senior-management leadership positions gaining a wealth of experience and developing a reputation for professional excellence and outstanding patient care.

Sam founded Hague Optical Ltd in 2008 and took over the ownership and operation of what was to become a highly successful optical franchise at Boots Opticians in Wolverhampton City Centre. Sam and her team transformed the practice which came to be recognised nationally by their parent company as their Practice of the Year in 2012.

Hague Optical were National finalists at the Opticians Awards in 3 consecutive years but more importantly for Sam, her patients became the strongest advocates for the practice which grew and changed beyond all recognition under her tenure. Sam’s contract ended in June 2018 and the practice was returned to Boots group-ownership and operation.

Following a period of freelance locum work Sam was keen to get back into local community optometry. Upon learning that Steven Sheward was looking to sell up and retire from his Tettenhall practice, Sam jumped at the chance for Hague Optical to acquire the business. Sheward Opticians of Tettenhall opened their doors on 3rd June 2019 and rebranded as Samantha Hague Optometry in January 2021.

As the Principal Optometrist, Sam ensures all clinical aspects of patient care are undertaken only by qualified personnel. She conducts eye examinations, retinal imaging, contact lens consultations and emergency/CUES appointments along with visual field screenings, dry eye assessments and Blephex treatments, and advises on spectacle lenses overseeing the dispensing process. Her approachable nature and down-to-earth attitude creates a relaxed feel to her consultations which are detailed, thorough and inclusive, with all patients being given the time to be fully involved in their care and her advice being tailored to each individual.

Being totally independent and not part-owned by other shareholders or a franchise company, Sam is able to recommend the very best solutions from the whole of the market without any external influence to ensure that you are always very well cared for, treating every patient as though they are a member of her family.

Sam has worked for the College of Optometrists as Regional Assessor for the Scheme for Registration for graduate trainees. She has always been keen to progress future generations of optometrists and has been responsible for personally mentoring over 20 pre-registration trainees.

Sam was an active member of the Wolverhampton Local Optometric Committee, the representative organisation for opticians delivering NHS services. Having been voted by her peers and immediately appointed Vice-Chair, Sam used her influence to input on both developing local NHS services and support her optometry colleagues in the Wolverhampton area.

Sam and Paul are an enviable husband-and-wife team since first meeting while working together at Vision Express more than 25 years ago. They have been living in Pattingham since 1997 and Samantha Hague Optometry has been a family affair from the very beginning, with their two sons, Ed and Douglas, both having worked part-time at the practice too.
